Blue Canoe Program

Beginning in mid-June until the end of August each year, our Blue Canoe team travels along the shores of lakes within the City of Kawartha Lakes and the Municipality of Trent Lakes.  Equipped with two canoes and knowledge about lake health and shoreline restoration techniques, they travel dock-to-dock answering questions about shorelines, lakes, and actions that landowners can take to help improve the health of their lake.

Some of the topics that our Blue Canoe team can advise landowners on include:

  • Preventing shoreline erosion
  • Managing aquatic plants
  • Minimizing blue-green algae outbreaks
  • Septic system maintenance
  • Deterring Canada Geese
  • Reducing E.coli close to shore

Landowners can also host a 'Dock Talk', where the team can meet with a group of cottage road neighbours and discuss the health of their lake, and some best management practices for lake property stewardship.

The team is happy to drop by at a time that is more convenient for you. Contact them today to book an appointment:

#BoastYourBMP on Social Media this Summer!

The Blue Canoe team sees so many great examples of Best Management Practices (BMPs) on properties around our watershed, and we want to help you show off all that hard work! This summer, #BoastYourBMP by sharing photos of the positive changes you’ve made to your property via social media.

We will retweet/share your photo on our social media pages to show other landowners how making small changes can make a big difference. At the end of each month we will hold a prize draw from the shared photos and the winner will have their choice of a bird box or a rain barrel.

Here’s how you can participate:

1)  Start (or maintain) a project on your property that will improve water quality or the health of our local lakes
2)  Snap a photo of the project that showcases all of your hard work
3)  Share the photo to Facebook or Twitter using the hashtags #BoastYourBMP and #BlueCanoe.
4)  Be entered in our monthly draw

You can find us on Twitter at @KawarthaConserv and on Facebook at Kawartha Conservation!
