Daily parking rates increase, annual passes remain unchanged at Ken Reid Conservation Area

July 26, 2019 – The daily parking rate at Ken Reid Conservation Area will increase to $4 effective August 6. Annual parking passes will remain unchanged at $75 plus HST ($60 plus HST for seniors).

The increase was approved by the Board of Directors during Thursday’s Board meeting.

“The increase in the daily parking rate is necessary to be able to continue to invest in the infrastructure, trails, off-leash dog park and programming at Ken Reid Conservation Area,” explained Kristie Virgoe, Director Stewardship and Conservation Lands.  “In the last three years alone, we have seen costs of maintaining the roadway increase by 63 per cent.”

While operating costs, and visitors, have continued to increase at Ken Reid Conservation Area, there has not been an increase to daily parking since 2015.

When the popularity of a natural area increases, additional resources, both human and financial, are required to properly maintain the area.

“Visitors are still able to bike, hike, walk and ski through Ken Reid Conservation Area at absolutely no cost,” said Ms. Virgoe. “There is no entrance fee to visit Ken Reid. The $4 is strictly a day-use parking fee charged per vehicle.

“For regular users of Ken Reid Conservation Area and the off-leash dog park, who visit more than twice per month, an annual parking pass is a great way to save money and help support the conservation area,” Ms. Virgoe added.

Two visits per month at the pay and display machine will cost visitors $96 per year, three visits per month would work out to $144 annually, whereas visitors can purchase a yearly pass for only $75 plus HST, and $60 for seniors.

“That is a great savings for regular visitors,” said Ms. Virgoe. “And an annual parking pass can make a great gift for family or friends who love nature or enjoying bringing their four-legged friends to our off-leash dog park.”

Annual parking passes are available for purchase at the Kawartha Conservation Administrative Centre from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Annual passes can also be purchased and mailed by calling our office at 705.328.2271.
