Protecting and enhancing the Oak Ridges Moraine and Greenbelt will be a major focus at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) this year. At the AGM on March 9th in Lindsay, Debbe Crandall, Policy Director with Save the Oak Ridges Moraine Coalition and Past Chair of the Oak Ridges Moraine Foundation, will discuss these unique landscapes and the unique opportunities that come with them.
The Oak Ridges Moraine is one of the most significant landforms in the province, encompassing a wide area that includes the south ends of the City of Kawartha Lakes, Township of Scugog, and Township of Cavan Monaghan, and the north end of the Municipality of Clarington. Often called the ‘rain barrel’ of Southern Ontario, the moraine absorbs rainwater into the ground, then slowly releases the cool, clean groundwater into creeks and rivers.
City of Kawartha Lakes Mayor Andy Letham will also speak at the event, and will discuss the City’s new Strategic Plan and the ways in which the objectives and actions in the Plan support a vision for a healthy environment in the Kawarthas.
Environmental Recognition Awards will be presented to individuals and groups within the Kawartha watershed who have made outstanding contributions in 2015 to a healthy environment. There will also be a year in review presentation on lake management planning, our pilot outdoor education program, conservation area improvements, and other projects in 2015.
The community is invited to attend the Annual General Meeting on March 9th from 4:30 to 6:30 pm at the Admiral Inn and Conference Centre. Following the meeting will be refreshments and an opportunity to network with the Board and guests.
