Canada's 150 and the Environment

Stewardship
Date: Saturday, October 14, 2017 01:00 PM

Venue: Ken Reid Conservation Area  |  City: Lindsay

The Kawartha Conservation Foundation invites you to help celebrate Canada 150 and the environment with a special free fun family event loaded with hands-on activities at Ken Reid Conservation Area on Saturday, October 14 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Thanks in part to a grant through the Kawartha Lakes Community Partnership and Development Fund Program for Canada 150th Celebrations, the Foundation is putting together a fun-filled afternoon with hands-on Canadian animal displays, guided hikes, an Environmental Fair and the always popular Birds of Prey show.

“As a Foundation we really want to engage families and children,” explained event organizer and Foundation Chair Julia Taylor. “We are so fortunate to live in a beautiful, natural area but it is important, now more than ever, to share with people why it is critical to protect our environment for future generations.”

The free event will open at 1 p.m. with ‘Hands on Exotics’ where adults will have an opportunity to get up close and personal with a variety of exotic animals from around the world.

From 2 to 3:15 there will be a series of guided hikes through Ken Reid Conservation Area’s diverse trails and a fun and interactive environmental fair.

“We have a great line-up for our environmental fair,” said Ms. Taylor. “We will have interactive, educational displays on everything from vermicomposting to water pollution, to how landfills are engineered, as well as displays and representatives from Green Up, Kawartha Lakes Waste Management department, Kawartha Conservation and more.

At 3:30 ‘Matt the Birdman’ will be on hand with his Birds of Prey hands for a fantastic, interactive live show.

“The Birds of Prey show is really awesome,” said Ms. Taylor. “People get to see the different birds fly and younger people have an opportunity to fly the falcon and really get an up close education about these magnificent birds.

“Autumn is a perfect time to enjoy Ken Reid Conservation Area and what better way to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday than by spending time in nature and getting a front row seat to some of the remarkable animals and birds that make our environment truly special and worth protecting,” added Ms. Taylor.

Be sure to mark Saturday, October 14 from 1 to 5 p.m. on your calendar, and plan to join the Kawartha Conservation Foundation for this wonderful and exciting free, family event.
