Local volunteers sought for Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup

CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES- A national campaign to clear shorelines of litter is coming to the City of Kawartha Lakes this month and everyone is invited to take part.

Kawartha Conservation, in partnership with the Friends of Kawartha Conservation, has registered the Lions' Park in Coboconk for the 2007 TD Canada Trust Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. Volunteers are asked to meet, rain or shine, on Saturday, September 22 at 10:00am in Lion's Park parking lot.

All ages are welcome to come out and collect litter from the shoreline. Garbage bags and gloves will be provided. Following the cleanup, volunteers will be served pizza will be served. Volunteers are encouraged to stay on to help plant a shoreline garden. This event is perfect for families looking for a way to get involved in an environmental project. Time spent can be used together community hours for high school credit.

“The Friends of Kawartha Conservation are leading a site again this year,” says Sasha Lambrinos for Kawartha Conservation, “and their members invite any and all helping hands in the community to come out and help clean up this great park. “

In 2006, approximately a dozen volunteers retrieved a total of 256.5 kilograms of debris from over 900 metres of shoreline within the communities of City of Kawartha Lakes and the Township of Scugog. Across Ontario more than 7,000 participants collected 26,991kilograms of litter.
