City of Kawartha Lakes Councillor Donna Villemaire elected Chair of Kawartha Conservation

Township of Galway-Cavendish and Harvey Councillor Peter Franzen elected Vice Chair

 

(Lindsay, January 13, 2010)  Donna Villemaire, from the City of Kawartha Lakes, was elected Chair of Kawartha Conservation today during the organization's Annual General Meeting.

I'm pleased to be leading Kawartha Conservation during an exciting new year,” said Chair Villemaire. “This year, we will be initiating a strategic planning process that will set a new vision, mission, mandate, strategic objectives and business priorities for Kawartha Conservation out to 2015.”

“I want to engage people across the watershed in the strategic planning process to ensure we are meeting both the present and future needs and health of our communities and environment,” she said.

Chair Villemaire also acknowledged the leadership of Jim McMillen as Chair of Kawartha Conservation in 2009.

Peter Franzen, from the Township of Galway-Cavendish and Harvey, was elected to Vice Chair. He expressed the important role of the Authority in the sustainable management of watershed resources.

“Kawartha Conservation provides important programs and services that help protect and enhance the natural features which make the Kawartha region a great place to be,” said Vice Chair Franzen. "I'm pleased to have a greater role on the Board of Directors to help ensure the sustainability of development in our watershed and the protection of important natural features."

Both the new Chair and Vice Chair were elected during the meeting to participate on the Friends of Kawartha Conservation Board of Directors, and the Chair was elected to represent Kawartha Conservation at Conservation Ontario, the umbrella organization for Ontario's 36 Conservation Authorities.

Also during the meeting, two board members and two staff were recognized for their years of service. Alex Ruth, a representative for the Township of Cavan Monaghan was recognized for 15 years of service on the Board of Directors; and David Marsh, from the City of Kawartha Lakes, was recognized for his 5 years of service on the Board. Mark Majchrowski, Director, Watershed Management, was recognized for 10 years of service; and Jessie James, Conservation Areas Coordinator, for five.

Kawartha Conservation is governed by the seven municipalities that overlap the natural boundaries of its watershed jurisdiction through representation on its Board of Directors. The municipalities include the City of Kawartha Lakes; Region of Durham; Township of Scugog; Township of Brock; Municipality of Clarington; Township of Galway-Cavendish and Harvey; and Township of Cavan Monaghan.
