Student Summer Job Opportunities

Kawartha Conservation in collaboration with Fleming College will be accepting applications from students in environmental programs requiring a two-week unpaid field placement in April.  Please see below for placement descriptions.

All applicants must submit the following by February 21, 2025:

  1. Cover letter, resume and 1–2-page statement of qualifications clearly demonstrating how that individual meets the requirements of the indicated position (if emailed, one MS WORD or ADOBE PDF file)
  2. Academic transcript
  3. Letter of reference from a professor
  4. Fleming field placement supervisor contact information

Successful candidates will complete health and safety training at the start of placement

Assistant Water Resources Technician - Placement

Working within the Kawartha Conservation watershed, this individual will contribute to the watershed monitoring team by assisting with various programs and projects. 

General Duties:

  • Stream discharge measurements
  • Water quality field sampling
  • Assessment of stream and other aquatic site conditions
  • Water quality and quantity data input and management
  • Assist with calibration and deployment of temperature loggers
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Experience in (or demonstrated knowledge of) field sampling techniques and equipment for aquatic environments
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Ability and aptitude for field work, occasionally under physically demanding conditions or inclement weather
  • Valid CPR and First Aid certification an asset

Conservation Areas Assistant
Full Time, 40 hours per week
May 5-August 29, 2025
$17.70 per hour, $18.70 per hour for returning students: Competition Closes February 28, 2025

The position

This position is responsible for supporting the advancement of the Conservation Lands programs including property maintenance, trail management and development, planting and monitoring restoration projects, general property maintenance, invasive species control, infrastructure improvements, and contributing to the strategic goals and advancement of the department. 

Responsibilities include

Possess the knowledge and experience relevant to the responsibilities of the position; identify knowledge gaps and seek out professional development; engage in continuing education and professional networks that elevate your expertise; utilize your expertise in the key functions of your position; transfer knowledge to contribute to the success of others; enhance and advance your professional career.

Apply your expertise in the following responsibilities:

  • Assist with daily property maintenance of five conservation areas. This includes mowing, trail trimming, landscaping, maintaining facility and property cleanliness.
  • Support habitat restoration projects on Conservation Lands. This will include planting species at risk, managing invasive species, weekly tending activities and the monitoring and reporting aspects of restoration projects.
  • Assist with the repair and maintenance of infrastructure. This will include repairing boardwalks, washrooms, and installing signage amongst other projects.
  • Implement a suite of trail maintenance activities. This will include aspects of trail decommissioning, trail creation, and ongoing trail maintenance.

Required Knowledge/Expertise/Skills

  • Enrollment in a post-secondary institution in environmental sciences or similar programs
  • Experience and knowledge of conservation areas/parks/trail maintenance and design
  • Knowledge of native flora and fauna
  • Demonstrated understanding of restoration techniques for SAR including grassland birds, wetlands, and Butternut trees.
  • Mechanical aptitude an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of equipment such as tractors, mowers, and other power equipment.
  • Carpentry, grounds maintenance, and small power equipment skills and experience and asset.
  • Demonstrated understanding of safety procedures and knowledge of the safe use of equipment.
  • Demonstrated Client services and teamwork skills.
  • Valid Chainsaw Certification an asset.
  • Valid Class G driver’s license within the Province of Ontario and held in good standing.
  • First aid certification an asset.

Administrative Assistant

The position

The successful candidate will support the Corporate Services department in day-to-day corporate operations, including reception on a relief basis, customer service, communications, record management, and human resources.  This position will provide the opportunity to gain hands on experience in a professional environment while contributing to the efficient function of a leading environmental organization.

Environmental Field Technician
Full Time, 35 hours per week

The position

The successful candidate will support the Integrated Watershed Management team to deliver across the program areas of water quality, water quantity, groundwater monitoring, biomonitoring, and our special projects on behalf of our municipal partners.

Responsibilities include

Possess the knowledge and experience relevant to the responsibilities of the position; identify knowledge gaps and seek out professional development; engage in continuing education and professional networks that elevate your expertise; utilize your expertise in the key functions of your position; transfer knowledge to contribute to the success of others; enhance and advance your professional career.   • Support and assist with water quality field sampling and analysis, including use of YSI multiparameter probe.
  • Support and assist with stream discharge/base flow measurements including data analysis.
  • Collect and document field data, translating information and inputting the data into spreadsheet/database programs.
  • Support with assessment of stream, fisheries, and other aquatic site conditions.
  • Support and assist with technical training and educational events and material.
  • Occasional communication with the public.

Required Knowledge/Expertise/Skills

  • Attendance or graduation from a university or college in areas such as Water Quality, Limnology, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, or other Environmental Science.
  • Experience or working knowledge in a variety of relevant field sampling techniques and monitoring protocols related to water quality and/or quantity.
  • Knowledge of natural water quality principles and local issues. 
    Understanding of safety procedures and knowledge of use of field equipment.
  • Experience of preparing reports for non-technical audiences.
    Knowledge of fluvial geomorphology/hydrology would be an asset.
  • Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network and Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol qualifications an asset.
  • Fish & wildlife and native vegetation identification skills would be an asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications including spreadsheet and databases.
  • Valid Class G driver’s license within the Province of Ontario and held in good standing.
  • Pleasure Craft Operators Card an asset.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certification, or ability to obtain prior to employment.

Required Knowledge/Expertise/Skills

  • University or college education specializing in Land Use Planning, Natural Resource Management, Ecosystem Management, Applied Planning – Environmental, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and policy driven programs or natural resource management.
  • Experience in dealing with relevant federal, provincial and municipal legislation and policies.
  • Excellent understanding of natural systems, applied at watershed and site scales.
  • Experience reviewing development applications and preparing permits under the Conservation Authority Ontario Regulations or other environmental legislation would be an asset.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365, and proficient in MS Word and Excel. 
  • Familiarity with SharePoint would be an asset.
  • Ability and experience in report writing would be an asset
  • Valid M.T.O. driver’s license  
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certification, an asset
  • Safety training on working around water an asset
  • Familiar with workplace legislation such as Employment
  • Standards Act, WSIB, Occupational Health and Safety, AODA.
