Celebrate GIS Day with Kawartha Conservation's GIS Specialist

NOVEMBER 12, 2021 – Join Kawartha Conservation GIS Specialist Nancy Aspden Wednesday, November 17 at noon for GIS Day as she takes participants through an informative free online workshop on how Geographical Information System (GIS) technology contributes to the work Kawartha Conservation does and how that impacts the communities it serves.

Discovering the World through GIS”, will explore how GIS technology is used for capturing, storing, analyzing, and using geographical information through a computer to create interactive maps. You can learn more and register for free for this upcoming event through the event registration page.

“We will be providing a live demonstration of our free online Property Mapping Tool, which is something that anyone can use to identify areas in our watershed that fall within a regulated area, source water protection zones, subwatersheds and more,” explained Aspden. “GIS is a technology that doesn’t need to be seen as overly complicated or technical, as tools like this provide opportunities for our community members to access the technology at any time.”

“We are celebrating GIS Day because it is a revolutionary technology that is incredibly useful for the work we do here at Kawartha Conservation,” said Aspden. “Whether it is for floodplain mapping, marking trails, creating story maps or otherwise, GIS technologies and spatial data are integral for the operation of our services.”

GIS Day is an annual international event that celebrates GIS technology and its applications. First introduced by spatial analytics world-leader Esri in 1999, GIS Day is an opportunity to learn about GIS and spatial data technology, explore new developments in the field and initiate discussion on how it can be used in the future.

This presentation is the second last installment of Kawartha Conservation’s 2021 IWM Speaker Series, a free monthly series of presentations that teach viewers about a variety of topics related to water quality monitoring, floods, mapping, and more.
