Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day at Ken Reid Conservation Area

KAWARTHA LAKES - This May 11th, nature enthusiasts are invited to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day at Ken Reid Conservation Area. This year’s theme focuses on insects, and highlights the pivotal role insects play in the migration and survival of birds. The day is packed with a variety of educational and engaging activities that promise to deepen your connection with the natural world.

Event Highlights:

• Dawn Chorus with Rob Stavinga: Experience the enchanting morning songs of our avian friends at sunrise. Rob Stavinga, Watershed Resources Technician, will guide you through this auditory and visual experience, explaining the significance of these early morning calls.
• Big Day Bird Count: Kick off the day by participating in a bird count that contributes to global conservation efforts.
   
• Winged Wonders: Bird Identification Adventure: Discover the diverse bird species that inhabit the conservation area with guided birdwatching hikes.
• Into the Canopy: Tree Identification Adventure: Explore the forest’s diverse tree species and learn about their ecological roles in supporting wildlife habitats.
• Pinnguaq Association Lead Hike: Engage in a unique exploration using technology to identify and map the sounds of nature, led by Caitie Blumsom of the Pinnguaq Association.
• Spring Ephemeral Identification Hike: Witness the transient beauty of spring ephemerals and learn about their ecological importance during this guided hike.
• eBird App Tutorial: Learn to use the eBird app with Jenna Stephens, which helps birders track and share their sightings, contributing to a global citizen science project.
• Historical Hike through Ken Reid: Join a guided tour to explore the rich natural landscapes and the storied past of the conservation area, highlighting its ecological diversity and conservation efforts.
• Exploring Climate Change Impacts: Explore the effects of climate change on local ecosystems in a guided hike that offers insights into the adaptive strategies of flora and fauna in response to environmental changes.

“Each activity is designed to offer unique insights and engaging experiences for nature lovers of all ages. “We’re providing a platform where the community can actively engage with and contribute to conservation efforts,” explains Carolyn Snider, Administration Support for Conservation Programs. “Join us to celebrate the beauty and necessity of migratory birds and their habitats.”
