Climate Change Action Program (CCAP) Seeks Volunteers for Precipitation Monitoring Program

March 9, 2023 – The Climate Change Action Program (CCAP) is calling on residents within the Kawartha Lakes/Kawartha Conservation Jurisdiction to participate in a volunteer-based precipitation monitoring program. The program aims to collect precipitation data from various locations within the region, which will be utilized by Kawartha Conservation staff to determine the differences in precipitation patterns across the area.

Volunteers will collect precipitation data year-round at their own properties, using a rain gauge and details provided by Kawartha Conservation. The program aims to expand data collection, educate the community on the effects of climate change, and provide valuable research applications for the region.

"The CCAP is a volunteer-based program that empowers individuals to take action against climate change," said Nancy Aspden, acting Manager of Integrated Watershed Management at Kawartha Conservation. "Through this program, residents can gain knowledge and experience in data collection using low-cost methods and equipment, while also contributing to a larger cause."

Volunteers can sign up on the Kawartha Conservation website under "Learn and get Involved > Citizen Science > Current Projects > Climate Change Action Program. The program is free of charge, and all participants will receive details and methods on how to collect precipitation data.

Results from the program will be annually summarized in the Climate Change Action Program report, and will also inform Kawartha Conservation's Flood Forecasting and Warning Network.

“Volunteering for the Climate Change Action Program's precipitation monitoring program in Kawartha Lakes is not only a chance to take action against the effects of climate change, but also a meaningful way to connect with your community and protect the natural resources that sustain us all,” added Aspden.
