Discover the joy of bird watching in the Kawarthas this spring

MARCH 21, 2023 – Spring is the perfect time for bird lovers to explore the Kawartha region, as a number of migratory birds return from their wintering grounds. The area offers a diverse range of habitats for birds, including wetlands, forests, and grasslands, making it a bird watcher's paradise.

To help visitors make the most of their birding experience, visitors to Ken Reid Conservation Area can use the Ken Reid Birding Guide or stop by the Kawartha Lakes Public Library to borrow a brand new Birding Backpack complete with binoculars, birding books, checklists and more.

With more than 1,200 hectares of land under its care, Kawartha Conservation provides access to a number of excellent bird-watching locations in the region.

Located 6 kms north of Lindsay, Ken Reid Conservation Area provides some of the best birding in the City of Kawartha Lakes, with excellent habitat for many species including waterfowl and songbirds.

More than 170 species of birds have been reported at Ken Reid Conservation Area. Visitors can pick up a hard-copy, or download a copy of the free Ken Reid Conservation Area Bird Checklist to see how many birds you can identify.

With nearly 500 different species observed in Ontario, there is always more species to learn about and discover visiting our conservation areas and other popular birding areas across the Kawartha region.

The Kawartha region is home to several unique bird species, as well as a stop-over location for a variety of birds on their migratory journey, including the common loon, bald eagle, sandhill crane, and great blue heron. Visitors can expect to see a variety of migratory birds during spring, including warblers, thrushes, and flycatchers.
