FLOOD WARNING
DATE: April 7, 2025
TIME: 1:20PM
Message sent on the basis of information received from:
- Kawartha Conservation Flood Forecasting network
- Trent Severn Waterway – Parks Canada
- Ministry of Natural Resources - Surface Water Monitoring Centre
- Environment and Climate Change Canada
Based on information from Trent Severn Waterway, Environment and Climate Change Canada and the Ministry of Natural Resources – Surface Water Monitoring Centre, Kawartha Conservation is issuing a Flood Warning for Monday, April 7, 2025, until 12:00pm Friday, April 11, 2025.
Kawartha Conservation advises that water levels across the Kawartha Lakes continue to rise due to a significant influx of water from last week’s precipitation and ongoing snowmelt. These elevated water levels increase the risk of shoreline flooding, creating potential safety hazards for residents in these affected areas. Large rivers such as the Burnt River and Gull River remain above seasonal average and continue to contribute large amounts of water into the Kawartha Lakes, while smaller, localized streams have started to recede.
Forecasts indicate there is the potential for small amounts of precipitation will fall in our watershed Monday evening and Thursday, with temperatures fluctuating throughout the week. Continued snowmelt in areas with remaining snowpack will further contribute to higher inflows into the Kawartha Lakes.
While widespread flooding is not expected, there is a significant flood risk to low-lying shorelines due to elevated water levels, strong currents, and ongoing flows throughout the system. Kawartha Conservation strongly advises residents to stay away from all watercourses during this time. Children should be always supervised while outside.
Northern tributaries, such as the Burnt River and Gull River are monitored by staff from the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR). Residents along these two rivers are requested to direct any questions concerning water levels to the Minden Area office at 705-286-1521 or refer to the messages issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR).
Kawartha Conservation continues to closely monitor the weather and watershed conditions while assessing the potential flood risk. We remain in close communication with our partner agencies, including the Trent-Severn Waterway, Ministry of Natural Resources – Surface Water Monitoring Centre, and neighboring Conservation.
We will continue advising the watershed residents, local municipalities, and partner agencies, about the situation using the Kawartha Conservation website, media outlets, and social media. You can subscribe to receive the Kawartha Conservation flood messages.
If you are aware of or have concerns about flooding, please contact Kawartha Conservation at 705.328.2271 or 705.344.0155 after hours.
This Flood Warning will be in effect until 12:00 pm Friday, April 11, 2025, and will be updated or removed as required.
