Kawartha Conservation seeks Talbot River Subwatershed farmers for water quality initiative

KAWARTHA LAKES, ONTARIO - Kawartha Conservation is excited to announce a new initiative aimed at improving water quality and fostering sustainable farming practices within the Talbot River subwatershed. We are reaching out to farmers and farm property owners in the area who are interested in participating in this important project. This is a fantastic opportunity for landowners who are dedicated to maintaining the health of their water, riparian areas, and livestock.

We are seeking volunteers to allow us to conduct water quality sampling on their properties. This initial phase is focused on gathering critical data and building lasting partnerships with local landowners. Our goal is to gain a better understanding of any water quality issues that may be present and work collaboratively with farmers to address these concerns effectively.

Ola Pasternak, Landowner & Community Support, emphasized the importance of this initiative.

"By working together with farmers, we can make significant strides in protecting our water resources,” she said. “This project not only benefits the environment but also supports the long-term health and productivity of the farms in our community."

Key Points:
  • Water Quality "Report Card": At the conclusion of the study, each participating landowner will receive a comprehensive report card detailing the water quality on their farm. This report will include recommended best management practices, which may be eligible for future funding.
  • Site Visits: We will be conducting initial site visits throughout August. Eligible sites will then have samples taken on three occasions between September and early December 2024.

“Kawartha Conservation is committed to supporting our local farmers and protecting our precious water resources,” said Pasternak. “Together, we can create a healthier, more sustainable future for the Talbot River sub-watershed.”
