Lake Scugog residents sought for fish spawning habitat project
MARCH 14, 2022 – Kawartha Conservation is looking for Lake Scugog shoreline property owners interested in participating in a fish spawning habitat restoration project.
Kawartha Conservation's Integrated Watershed Management (IWM) department is looking to place river-rock along the shoreline of eligible properties as part of the Lake Scugog Enhancement Project. Areas of interest for the project include Birch Island, Caesarea, Fralick’s Beach, Goreski’s Landing, Lakeside Beach, Oakdene Point, Scugog Point, Starr’s Beach, Sunset View, and Washburn Island.
“This project focuses on improving key areas for fish habitat as a way to promote and sustain fish spawning and populations in Lake Scugog,” said Kawartha Conservation’s Aquatic Biologist and project lead Brett Tregunno. “One of the qualities of a healthy lake is strong biodiversity, and in volunteering for this project, landowners have the opportunity to positively impact the health of Lake Scugog.”
Landowners that have volunteered will be contacted by the IWM department to identify a date and time for a site visit to determine property eligibility. Once eligibility is confirmed, landowners will be notified and provided with details about next steps and project timelines.
The Lake Scugog Enhancement Project encompasses a wide range of restoration activities that provide environmental, social, economic, tourism and recreational benefits to the Port Perry and Lake Scugog areas. Along with dredging, wetland protection, and stormwater management, fish spawning habitat restoration is essential to the conservation and restoration of the lake.
