'Leaf Man' Story Walk begins at Ken Reid Conservation Area
SEPTEMBER 8, 2022 – Visitors to Ken Reid Conservation Area can now read 'Leaf Man', the newly featured story along the Story Walk Trail, for the entire month of September.
Written by Lois Ehlert, ‘Leaf Man’ is all about the wonders of autumn and the power of imagination. As leaves begin to turn beautiful shades of orange, red, and yellow, the cool, fall air scatters them across the landscape and creates patterns in nature. If you look closely, you might see a pile of leaves that looks like a person, or a bird, or even a fish. What story do you see in the leaves?
“He blew over the fields of pumpkins and winter squash, and flew over the turkey, past potatoes, carrots, and cabbage in rows,” reads a page from the story. “A Leaf Man’s got to go where the wind blows.”
The Story Walk experience is made possible through a partnership with the Kawartha Lakes Public Library, who provide a new story to be featured along the trail each month. As summer fades into fall and a new school year begins, the Story Walk provides the perfect opportunity for children to practice learning outside of the classroom in a relaxing, natural environment.
“Spending time in nature can help improve memory, boost creativity, and make you feel more relaxed,” explained Kristie Virgoe, Director of Stewardship and Conservation Lands. “Giving children the opportunity to exercise their reading abilities in a new environment teaches them valuable skills and allows them to learn, grow, and explore at their own pace.”
“With a new story available each month and over 10kms of trails available throughout the conservation area, there’s no telling where your imagination might take you,” said Virgoe. “Visit Ken Reid this fall to create memories that will last a lifetime.”
The Story Walk is located along the Pond Loop Trail at Ken Reid Conservation Area, adjacent to the main parking lot and off-leash dog park. Visitors can park at Ken Reid Conservation Area for $4 per day.
