New campaign educates on connection between phosphorus and water quality

July 19, 2023 – Kawartha Conservation is launching a new social media campaign aimed at educating and informing the public about the crucial role of phosphorus in lake and water quality. The campaign, titled ‘Phosphorus Matters: Protecting Our Water,’ will provide engaging facts and valuable tips on how individuals can actively contribute to reducing phosphorus levels in water sources.

Phosphorus is a vital nutrient that plays a significant role in the growth of aquatic plants. However, excessive levels of phosphorus can lead to harmful consequences, including the proliferation of aquatic weeds, a decline in oxygen levels, diminished water clarity, and the formation of toxic blue-green algae blooms. These issues not only disrupt the delicate balance of our ecosystems but also pose risks to human and animal health.

"Phosphorus pollution poses a significant threat to the health and quality of our water resources. By raising awareness and providing practical solutions, we aim to empower individuals to take meaningful actions in reducing phosphorus runoff and preserving the integrity of our lakes and water bodies," explained Nancy Aspden, Acting Manager of Integrated Watershed Management at Kawartha Conservation.

‘Phosphorus Matters: Protecting Our Water" aims to empower individuals, including cottagers, farmers, and private waterfront landowners, with knowledge and practical solutions to reduce phosphorus runoff into water sources. By utilizing various social media platforms, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Twitter, the campaign will share informative content, interesting facts, and actionable tips on how everyone can contribute to preserving the health and quality of our lakes and water bodies.

"As water quality specialists, we understand the critical role that phosphorus plays in aquatic ecosystems. Through this campaign, we hope to equip people with the knowledge and tools to make a positive difference in protecting our water resources," noted Kawartha Conservation Water Quality Specialist, Tanner Liang.

Through a series of 10 weekly posts throughout the summer months and ending in September , the campaign will highlight the sources of phosphorus pollution, such as eroded soils, lawn and garden fertilizers, and animal waste. It will also emphasize the importance of responsible nutrient management and offer effective strategies for reducing phosphorus runoff. The weekly campaign will provide practical tips, including proper lawn and garden care, responsible pet waste disposal, and erosion control methods.

Kawartha Conservation invites the public to join the ‘Phosphorus Matters: Protecting Our Water’ campaign by following our social media accounts and actively participating in the discussions. By sharing knowledge and implementing the suggested practices, individuals can make a significant positive impact on water quality in their communities and beyond.
