New story walk begins on permanent trail at Ken Reid Conservation Area

July 26, 2021 –  “A mouse took a stroll through a deep dark wood,” but what awaited the mouse on his journey? Beginning Saturday, July 31 and continuing throughout August, the latest Story Walk at Ken Reid Conservation Area will feature “The Gruffalo”, a story of a clever mouse and a gullible beast, written by Julia Donaldson. For this experience, families and children will join the mouse on its journey through the woods, meeting all sorts of animals along the way, and maybe even a Gruffalo.

The Story Walk experience at Ken Reid Conservation Area comes as part of a partnership between Kawartha Conservation and Kawartha Lakes Public Library which encourages families and kids to explore nature, spend time outside, and read fun stories along the way.

“We are excited to be able to continue this partnership with Kawartha Lakes Public Library, and it’s a fantastic way to get families and kids involved with the projects we have going on at Ken Reid,” said Kristie Virgoe, Director, Stewardship and Conservation Lands. “Kawartha Conservation has a commitment to connect people to nature in a way that is meaningful for them. The Story Walk is just one of the ways we fulfill that commitment by fostering an appreciation for nature in our visitors, as well as providing opportunities for kids to develop reading skills in an engaging way.”

Also new this month, visitors can look forward to seeing a brand new permanent installation for our Story Walk. Our Conservation Area Lands staff have been busy dedicating time to developing these permanent structures as the Story Walks have become more and more popular with area families and visitors.

“Something that’s great about these new structures is that they serve as a more permanent housing for each of the new stories,” continued Virgoe. “We recognize that the Story Walk is something that encourages people to come out and visit Ken Reid, and we want to ensure that we’re providing the best possible experience for our visitors.”

The Story Walk is located along the Pond Trail, right next to the off-leash dog park at Ken Reid Conservation Area. Visitors can park their vehicle right at the entrance to the trail for $4 per day.
