New word scramble course installed at Windy Ridge Conservation Area

NOVEMBER 16, 2021 – Visitors to Windy Ridge Conservation Area can now participate in the newly installed word scramble course, a fun and engaging outdoor puzzle game that stretches across the trail system.

Using the word scramble guide to assist them in their journey, visitors can begin the word scramble in the parking lot area at Windy Ridge Conservation Area, located on Mount Horeb Road between Highway 35 and Omemee, and follow the loop to complete the activity, filling in the correct words as they go.

A word scramble is a fun, interactive game where participants find letters and corresponding numbers to arrange and spell out a series of words. Enjoying the trails, the views and keeping a close eye out for the wood cookies with the letters and numbers, the word scrambles are a great way to engage younger visitors and their families to our conservation areas.

“Our word scramble takes a slightly different approach to the game, transforming it from an indoor pencil-and-paper game into one you can experience in the great outdoors,” said Kristie Virgoe, Director, Stewardship and Conservation Lands. “With over 25 wood cookies located throughout the trail system, players will be able to find letters hidden in the forest to help them complete the word scramble.”

The word scramble course is a popular activity implemented by Conservation Lands staff to provide a new and engaging way for families and visitors to enjoy nature in a fun and educational way.

“In the past we have received lots of positive feedback on our word scramble courses,” said Virgoe. “One of the major draws to this kind of activity is that it gives people the chance to explore nature on their own or with family and friends. These types of activities can be fun and beneficial to anyone, providing the opportunity to get physical activity, train your brain and explore the conservation area in a new and exciting way.”

New and returning visitors to Durham East Cross Forest and Pigeon River Headwaters Conservation Area can look forward to new word scrambles becoming part of the family fun activities at those conservation areas as well, with installations planned for early 2022.
