'Over and Under the Snow' arrives along the Story Walk Trail

DECEMBER 7, 2022 – Available now and for the entire month of December, visitors to Ken Reid Conservation Area can read ‘Over and Under the Snow’, the newly featured story along the Story Walk Trail.

Written by Kate Messner, ‘Over and Under the Snow’ explores a wintery forest kingdom packed full of beavers, mice, bears and more, teaching readers about how different woodland animals survive the winter. Gliding atop the snow on a pair of skis, a young girl and her father explore the woods and look for signs of animals, both above and below the snow, as they make their way through the winter wonderland.

“Over the snow I glide. Into woods, frosted fresh and white,” reads a page from the story. “Under the snow is a whole secret kingdom, where the smallest forest animals stay safe and warm.”

The Story Walk Trail is an interactive reading experience made possible by the Kawartha Lakes Public Library, who provide a new story to be featured along the trail each month. Nestled amongst a quiet, snow-covered trail, the Story Walk gives children the opportunity to practice their reading skills in a unique learning environment, spend time with their loved ones, and make memories along the way in the great outdoors.

“Reading ‘Over and Under the Snow’ along the Story Walk Trail this winter is a fantastic way to learn about some of the amazing wildlife of our region, while also exploring the place that they call home,” said Melissa Creasy-Alexander, Conservation Areas Technician. “With snow beginning to fall, air beginning to cool, and holiday celebrations right around the corner, there’s no better time to bundle up and enjoy the beauty of winter at Ken Reid Conservation Area.”

The Story Walk is located along the Pond Loop Trail at Ken Reid Conservation Area, adjacent to the main parking lot and off-leash dog park. Visitors can park at Ken Reid Conservation Area for $4 per day.
