Provincially mandated updates to Conservation Authorities Regulatory Mapping coming into effect

MAY 28, 2024 - Kawartha Conservation has implemented significant updates to its regulatory mapping to comply with provincially mandated changes outlined in the Conservation Authorities Act and the consolidation of all 36 Conservation Authorities under a single regulation (O. Reg 41/24). These updates incorporate the latest legislative framework and technical information, ensuring that our regulated areas mapping is current and accurate.

Kawartha Conservation CAO Mark Majchrowski and Matthew Mantle, Director, Planning and Development Services, provided an update on the changes to the Board of Directors on Thursday, May 23. As a result, the mapping updates provide crucial information on regulated areas within Kawartha Conservation’s jurisdiction, including updated wetland buffers, floodplain information, and erosion hazards.

The updated mapping reflects changes such as the legislative reduction of wetland buffers from 120 meters to 30 meters, and the incorporation of new LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data, which significantly improves elevation accuracy. This new data enables better identification of 100-year lake level floodplains, meander belts, and erosion hazard areas, ensuring Kawartha Conservation mapping is comprehensive and reflective of current conditions.

"We are committed to maintaining accurate and up-to-date regulatory mapping to support environmental protection and sustainable development within our watershed," said Matthew Mantle, Director, Planning and Development Services. "These updates are essential for managing flood risks, protecting water quality, and conserving natural habitats."

To provide an opportunity for the public, stakeholders, and municipalities to learn more about these updates, Kawartha Conservation will host an open house on Wednesday, June 12, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Kawartha Conservation Administration office, located at 277 Kenrei Road, Lindsay, ON. This event will offer detailed information on the mapping changes and allow for questions and discussions with our staff.

For more information on the updated regulatory mapping or the open house event, please contact Matthew Mantle, Director, Planning and Development Services at 705-328-2271 Ext. 213.
