The Mitten returns to the Story Walk Trail in time for the holidays

DECEMBER 1, 2023 – Visitors to Ken Reid Conservation Area can once again read the beloved children’s tale ‘The Mitten’ as it makes another appearance along the Story Walk Trail, this time for the entire month of December, just in time for the holidays.

‘The Mitten’ tells the story of how a young boy’s mitten that gets lost in the snow quickly becomes a place of shelter for a variety of friendly woodland animals. Starting with a mole, then a rabbit, a fox, and even a bear, curious creatures keep packing themselves into the mitten and stretching it out to keep themselves warm.

“It started snowing, but the animals were snug in the mitten,” reads a page from the story. “The fox poked his muzzle in. When the mole, the rabbit, the hedgehog, the owl, and the badger saw his shiny teeth, they gave the fox lots of room.”

A free attraction open year-round, the Story Walk Trail at Ken Reid Conservation Area is a fantastic place for children and families to experience the beauty of nature and the benefits of spending time with loved ones while practicing their reading skills along the way.

“Partnering with the Kawartha Lakes Public Library to create such an immersive outdoor reading experience is something that we are incredibly proud to be able to provide for our community,” said Conservation Lands Technician at Kawartha Conservation, Calli Burke. “Step out into the winter wonderland this December at Ken Reid Conservation Area and enjoy all that the forest has to offer.”

The Story Walk is located along the Pond Trail at Ken Reid Conservation Area, adjacent to the main parking lot and off-leash dog park. Visitors can park at Ken Reid Conservation Area for $4 per day and are reminded to dress warmly for their winter adventure.
