'Up, Up, Down' arrives at the Story Walk Trail at Ken Reid Conservation Area

MAY 4, 2022 – Visitors to Ken Reid Conservation Area can now read ‘Up, Up, Down’, a classic tale from world-renowned children’s author Robert Munsch, along the Story Walk Trail for the entire month of May.

Up, Up, Down’ tells the tale of a curious and active girl named Anna who loves climbing, but often loses her balance and tumbles down to the ground. Even as her parents teach her not to, she continues to climb and fall from dressers, refrigerators, and trees, reaching higher and higher with each climb.

“But the next time she was very careful. She went up, up, up, up, up, up … all the way to the top of the tree,” reads a page from the story.

Each month, the Kawartha Lakes Public Library provides stories to be featured along the Story Walk Trail in efforts to promote a unique and exciting learning environment for young readers. The partnership, beginning in 2020, has helped attract families and children from all over the region to experience the natural beauty of Ken Reid Conservation Area.

“We are very thankful for our partnership with the Kawartha Lakes Public Library,” said Conservation Areas Technician Melissa Creasy-Alexander. “Seeing all the happy, smiling faces along the Story Walk Trail shows us the value of the partnership and its impact on our community.”

“The Story Walk Trail is one of many outdoor activities available at Ken Reid Conservation Area and is a great introduction to the different trails and amenities we offer,” continued Creasy-Alexander. “Remember that even though this month’s story is all about climbing, visitors are reminded to stay on the marked trails and to visit the playground if they are looking to climb.”

The Story Walk Trail at Ken Reid Conservation Area runs along the Pond Trail, which begins steps away from the main parking lot, right beside the off-leash dog park. Visitors can park at the main parking lot for $4 per day, and are reminded to bring bug spray, sunscreen and water as spring weather arrives in the Kawarthas.
