Virtual Flood Preparedness and Safety Public Seminar tonight

MARCH 18 – Join Kawartha Conservation tonight, Thursday, March 18 for an informative and fast-paced virtual Flood Preparedness and Safety Public Seminar.

While spring is typically when a lot of property owners experience flooding issues, the increase and severity of severe storm events has made flood potential an increasing reality at different times of the year.

Flood Preparedness SignOn Thursday evening Kawartha Conservation’s Emma Collyer, Director, Integrated Watershed Management will host a multi-partner event on a range of topics from 6 to 8 p.m.

“This free online event is a great opportunity for full time and seasonal residents anywhere to learn more about flood preparedness and what resources are in place to assist property owners,” said Ms. Collyer. “We have a great line-up of speakers who will be talking about their specific roles and functions in flooding emergencies.”

Kicking off the event will be Kawartha Conservation hydrologist Iryna Shulyarenko who will talk about roles and responsibilities in a flood situation.

The next presenter will be Anna Ciorap, Water Management Manager at Ontario Waterways who will present on the Trent Severn Waterway Water Management Program.

City of Kawartha Lakes Human Services Manager Janine Mitchell and Dave Frazer with the Canadian Red Cross will present on how to connect with and apply for financial assistance with Human Services in the event of a flood situation.

The presentations will conclude with Cheryl Evans, Director of Home Flood Protection at the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation at the University of Waterloo. Ms. Evans will present on reducing the risk of home flood damage.

“We have brought together a panel of experts who all address different aspects on a flooding emergency,” explained Ms. Collyer. “The presentations will provide participants with a good overview and there will be a question and answer period at the end with all of our panel participants.”

The Flood Preparedness and Safety Public Seminar is free for anyone to attend, from anywhere, but registration is required to log into the Zoom presentation.
