'Winter is Here' kicks off the New Year on the Story Walk at Ken Reid Conservation Area
JANUARY 7, 2022 – As snow continues to fall and the New Year begins, visitors to Ken Reid Conservation Area can now read ‘Winter is Here’, the newly featured story available along the Story Walk trail for the entire month of January.
‘Winter is Here’, written by Kevin Henkes, gives readers the opportunity to learn about all the different ways that people experience winter, how the landscape changes, the colours of the season, and how the world slowly transforms back into Spring.
“Winter is here. It’s everywhere,” reads the opening page of the story. “It’s falling from the sky and sitting on the houses and dripping from the roofs.”
For more than a year, the Story Walk Trail at Ken Reid Conservation Area has featured a new story each month provided by Kawartha Lakes Public Library, creating an engaging, dynamic and comfortable learning environment for young readers where the words of the stories come to life in the world around them.
“The Story Walk is a fun, educational experience that brings families together for outdoor fun while helping children develop their reading skills,” said Director of Stewardship and Conservation Lands, Kristie Virgoe. “This is a perfect time of year to check out ‘Winter is Here’ on the Story Walk because it allows children to read about the winter season while experiencing it around them, surrounded by snowy trees, chirping birds, and their loved ones.”
The Story Walk Trail runs along the Pond Trail, which is located right beside the main parking lot and adjacent to the off-leash dog park. Visitors looking to park within Ken Reid Conservation Area can do so for $4 per day. As winter weather continues, remember to bring warm winter clothing such as coats, hats, boots and mittens for your outdoor adventure.
