'When It Starts to Snow' story walk begins at Ken Reid Conservation Area
DECEMBER 1, 2021 – Just in time for winter weather, and for the entire month of December through to the new year, ‘When it Starts to Snow’ has arrived at the Story Walk Trail at Ken Reid Conservation Area.
Written by Phillis Gershator, ‘When it Starts to Snow’ explores the habits of all different kinds of animals when the weather starts to get colder, moving from the farm to the pond, to the forest and back home, using rhyming and fun illustrations along the way.
“What if it starts to snow? What do you do? Where do you go?”
“We fly south,” say the geese, “all in a row. Honk, honk, honk, when it starts to snow.”
The stories featured along the Story Walk Trail are provided by Kawartha Lakes Public Library, in a joint effort with Kawartha Conservation to provide a safe and fun outdoor learning environment that promotes spending time outside, practicing reading skills, and enjoying time with family.
“‘When it Starts to Snow’ is a fantastic read provided to us by Kawartha Lakes Public Library,” said Kristie Virgoe, Director of Stewardship and Conservation Lands. “With winter now here, many animals in our conservation areas have been changing their habits to adapt to colder weather. ‘When it Starts to Snow’ gives young readers the chance to learn about each of these animals in the place that they call home.”
This month marks the 1-year anniversary of the Story Walk Trail, which has featured 10 other stories over the past year.
The story walk is located along the Pond Trail, a 229m path located right next to the main parking lot at Ken Reid Conservation Area. As colder temperatures approach, remember to bring warm winter clothing for your outdoor reading experience.
